How many clubs are allowed in a golf bag?
How many should you even have?
There are certain things you should know before playing golf, and the amount of clubs you are allotted is one of them.
The answer is 14.
You can mix and match whatever clubs you want, but you can not exceed the 14-club limit.
As a new golfer, I’m sure you will get away with it as you are still learning how to play golf.
Once you start playing for a few months, carrying no more than 14 clubs is good practice.
What 14 Clubs Should You Carry?
Not every golfer uses the same setup, and that’s okay.
These will help you understand the different clubs and what works best.
We all play differently; what works for some won’t work for others.
For starters, here are the fourteen clubs you should carry.
- Driver
- 3-wood
- 5-wood
- Hybrid (7-wood)
- 4 iron
- 5 iron
- 6 iron
- 7 iron
- 8 iron
- 9 iron
- Pitching wedge
- Lob wedge
- Sand wedge
- Putter
Do You Need to Carry 14 Clubs?
No, you don’t need to carry all 14 clubs.
Some golfers think carrying fewer clubs is better, but I wouldn’t take that advice just yet.
As you progress in the game, you will see that some clubs you barely use or do not use at all.
You will find where your game is stronger, and you will find where it’s weak.
From there, you will carry the clubs you use most.
You can always replace a wood with another wedge or vice-versa, and you can replace that 4 iron with a hybrid.
Don’t be like me and carry around a 3-wood I never use.
Then again, I might start using it.
Hmmm…
So, How Many Clubs Are Allowed in a Golf Bag?
You can not go over 14, but you can always carry less.
At the very least, you know that 14 is the magic number.
Don’t show up to the course with 18 clubs, as the grouchy member of the bunch will probably call you out on it.
If you’re playing with a new group or one other buddy, take what you feel you need and figure out what works for you first.
Then, you can start leaving clubs at home, all while picking and choosing which works best for YOU.
Conclusion – Carry What Works Best
Now that we know you should only carry 14 clubs in your golf bag, it’s time you figure out what clubs work best for the type of player you are.
As you play more, you will see that you hit shots differently from others.
Some golfers hit it sky-high like the pros, while others try to walk the ball to the green.
Depending on your skill level and how you grow as a golfer will ultimately decide on how many clubs you carry and which ones you do carry.
Golf’s complicated, but you’ll figure it out soon enough.
